Tuatha Teolaí - February Virtual Gathering

Tuatha Teolaí

In a time where change is the only constant, galivanting is grounded, merriment curtailed and events cancelled; I found myself longing for company, for something to look forward to, for connection. From this place of yearning, Tuatha Teolaí was born.

Tuatha Teolaí can be translated as Comforting Tribe. Its a monthly virtual Community of like-minded people who come together to listen, learn & share in live online (via Zoom) gathering. All from the comfort of our own homes! Tuatha Teolaí is underpinned by the values of knowledge, peace, encouragement & community – all vital when navigating the ebb & flow of our times. You don’t have to be a Yogi to join in, you just need to have a curious mind & open heart. It’ll have a bit of an Irish slant to it all too!

I’d love for you to spread the word too! The more people you share this with, the more we can help because these gatherings come from the heart – each TT will have an element of giving back to our Community in the form of charitable donations – please see more below.

How does it work?

Hi Maeve here! I’m delighted to host guest speakers aligned to each month’s theme. Our next gathering will be on Saturday 27th February 8pm - 9.30pm.

This month's Tuatha Teolaí is based on the theme of “Spring Tides”. In this edition we focus on our relationship with the Sea as Island People. Water is life. We are surrounded by sea, we are made up of approximately 60%. It's literally in our blood. This year we have seen so many of us drawn to the beaches. Gathering at the coast all over Ireland to breathe fresh clean sea air, to walk in the wild weather and feel the wind on our faces. We have felt called to be immersed in the sea in all manner of waves. Donations this month go to the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institute) & Ocean Research Conservation Ireland (https://www.orcireland.ie/). Thank you in advance for supporting & giving back.

Light the fire or stove or even a candle, snuggle up with some delicious nibbles & a warm drink, grab your blanket, note pad & pen. Prepare for an evening of relaxation, fascinating conversation & good craic!

This month’s special guests are Ken O’ Sullivan, Kevin Williams & Caroline Spillane

About Ken

Ken is a documentary filmmaker based in Lahinch, Co. Clare, who founded Sea Fever Productions in 2006. The company’s eponymous release in 2007 was followed by a number of high-profile commissions, Farraigí na hÉireann for TG4, Ireland’s Ocean for RTÉ, The Silver Branch for Irish Film Board as well as work for the BBC & ITV, culminating in 2018’s critically acclaimed Ireland’s Deep Atlantic. His book Stories from the Deep (2019) is spun from his first-hand experience as an underwater cameraman and filmmaker, from memory, natural history and the culture of Ireland’s coastal communities.

Ken is a passionate marine conservationist and heavily involved in conservation projects. Ken is very proud of his roots and ties to his heritage home in Fenit too and I'm so looking forward to speaking to Ken and hearing a selection of his incredible stories of the Sea and the secrets it holds.

About Kevin
Kevin’s name is synonymous with swimming in Kerry. Kevin began swimming in his 30s for health reasons and hasn’t stopped since! He holds many accolades, for example, he was the first man to swim solo from Blennerville to Maharees (20km), Fenit to Blennerville & back (16km). He is one of few swimmers to complete swims like Robben Island in South Africa, Alcatraz in San Francisco. Over 7 times he has participated in Cork Distance Week swimming over 100km.

In 2011 Kevin began swim coaching under the name "Swim the Kingdom" and he supports swimmers achieve their goals no matter how big or small. He coached legends like Elaine Burrows the first woman to swim the English Channel. Kevin believes swimming is a powerful tool in the fight for better mental health.

I can't wait to speak to Kevin about his adventures and to delve more into his relationship with the Sea and how he now supports others to develop their bond with it too.
