This year has been a wild one – full of highs and lots of feckin lows if I’m honest. But one of the BEST things that’s come from this year for me has been reigniting my passion for writing. Over the last few years, I returned to writing but limited myself to social media posts. As a youngster I wrote poetry & prose lot but sort of abandoned that from my early 20s onwards.
Despite the dips in and out of writing, I’ve kept up diary over the decades. It’s often been full of laments, rants, plans and ideas. It is an incredible way of trying to clear my head. They are purely private brain dumps but sometimes powerful stuff comes from them! But it there on the page I put my world to write (pun intended!).
During the most recent lockdown of 2020 I signed up for a creative writing course online via UCC and from that first Monday morning when I joined class, I fell in love writing all over again. I adore words! I also loved being with people who also had a passion for writing and felt so motivated listening to their pieces.
I came across the concept of Morning Pages a while back – sitting down to write daily before beginning the day. A check in with myself before I check in with the rest of the world, so to speak. Writing helps me make sense of the world. When you are working on your writing, you’re working on yourself. It is very true. The Morning Pages are a journal really, a stream of consciousness without filter, a glorious way to purge the whirling thoughts and gather them on paper. No judgement, no reprisal. They are only for me, they help me realise my thoughts are not facts, neither are my feelings. They are temporary and fleeting. I often find it even more useful to use prompts too and questions to help focus my train of thought sometimes.
As I face ahead to 2021, I am naturally reflecting on the year that was. I am also focusing on what’s yet to come and what I would like from 2021. I love a new year, it is like a blank slate or a clean page in a new journal.
I’m so passionate and convinced of the value of writing and journaling that I’d like to share the questions I’ll be working on with you over the 5 days starting from 4th January 2021 and hey if you like them, perhaps you might like to join me for a NEW 21 day journaling course I’m launching. We start this one on 11th January – 31st January together and hopefully by the end of January we will each have a plan to move forwards with into 2021 and make it an amazing year!
